Canvas Music Course

Executive Summary

The above screencast is an overview of my 6th grade Music Appreciation online Canvas course.  It was done for a Teaching in K-12 Online course from my M.Ed. in Education Technology degree.  It gives you a good run down of the different sections I built for this course in Canvas LMS.  The music course is a three week example.  Each week consists of objectives, lessons, originally made screencasts, originally made worksheets/handouts, and assessments.  Week 1 is titled "Music Terms and MuseScore".  It covers learning basic music terms and starting to be introduced to a music notation software called MuseScore.  The lesson includes video tutorials on music terms, PDF reviews of music terms, Quizlet website flash cards, video tutorials on downloading and using MuseScore, and a multiple choice exam, and a MuseScore project assignment.  Week 2 is titled "Introduction to Rhythmic Patterns".  In this lesson, there are video tutorials on different rhythmic patterns, a screencast on how to use MuseScore to record rhythmic patterns, a rhythmic performance assignment, and a rhythmic writing assignment.  Week 3 is titled "Introduction to Solfege".  In this lesson, there are video tutorials on solfege, a video tutorial on how to complete the assignments of the lesson, MuseScore solfege assignment, solfege performance assignment, and a melodic writing assignment.  Other sections that were created for this course are a announcements section, grades section, and a syllabus section.

Personal Reflection

The 6th Grade Music Appreciation class was a final project for my Teaching in K-12 Online course.  Leading up to this project you had many other steps to take to get there.  First, you had to make a curriculum map.  This is the first step to making and implementing a curriculum.  Next, you need to develop learning objectives, outcomes and learning targets.  I also had the choice of LMS that I was going to use.  Learning Management Systems that are popular in education are Edmodo, Canvas, Moodle, and Blackboard.  Google Classroom is another that is commonly used although it is not considered a LMS.  For my project I choose to go with Canvas.  I had used Canvas in community college classes before and like simple and easy format that it provides.  Developing screencasts was also a useful skillset in making this course.  Screencast are great for making instructional videos, tutorials, and introduction videos.  Making presentations also helps with designing online courses.  There are many creative presentation websites that you can use to make presentations.  Using audio clips or podcasts is a useful way to describe and discuss topics in a online class.  Lastly, learning how to make assessments and grading rubrics for your lessons is important in order to assess the work of your students and to evaluate how effective your course is at helping your students learn the subject materials.
