Curriculum Map

Executive Summary

This Curriculum Map project was done for a Curriculum and Instruction: Models and Implementation course from my M. Ed. in Educational Technology.  This course was a course that teaches models of curriculum and instruction and there uses and implementation.  This curriculum map that I designed is for beginning ESL (English as a Second Language) for adults.  When developing this curriculum for learning adults, I incorporated learning characteristics of adults.   Adults tend to be slower learners so the eight-week course is supposed to be a gradual English learning experience.  Each week builds upon the previous week and also has an extensive review.

This eight-week course covers the basics of speaking English.  Each week is one 3-hour class but with weekly assignments/homework for the following week.  Week one will be on “how to introduce yourself”, week two will be on “telling others about yourself”, week three is on “where you work and live”, week four is on “counting numbers and telling time”, week five is on “asking and answering questions”, week six is on “talking about your day and week”, week seven is on “what you do in your free time”, and finally week eight is “review vocabulary words:  nouns, verbs, and adjectives”.

I based my curriculum map on the Understanding by Design model.  I used backwards design to break my curriculum down into three stages.  Stage 1 (identify desired results), stage 2 (determine acceptable evidence), and stage 3 (plan learning experiences and instruction).  I then broke down my curriculum in outcomes, objectives, learning targets, assessments, and resources.  Then there is a breakdown of standards that they align to.  Since I didn’t find any ESL standards, I used common core standards for first grade English.

I tried to use the Curriculum 21 model and incorporate technology and new styles of learning into my class.  Of the 4c’s, I’m mostly using communication and collaboration as the main techniques.  Since this is an English learning class, individual and groups work will be key to learning how to speak the English that is represented in the lesson.  Also, making sure that life and career skills are a focus will be important for adult learners.  I will be using technology in my lectures and they will have videos and a PowerPoint presentation screencast to use during the week.  I will also be introducing them to different phone and iPad apps that they can use to help them practice on their own.  This class will also be hybrid online in a way that everyone will have access to their own canvas portal that will contain all of the lessons, videos, worksheets, puzzles, games, apps, vocabulary sheets, etc.

Personal Reflection

The Curriculum Map project was my first major curriculum map project.  It provided me with a in-depth look into the complexities of putting together curriculum for a class.  This is a 8 week course that is being used to create a ESL course outside of school.  I started this course in Blackboard for my Distance Learning course which is also included in my
e-portfoilio.  The final sixteen week version of this course will be included in my www.englishinharmony.com website.  I will be using this same curriculum map model to design the other eight weeks of this course.  As mentioned in the Executive Summary, the Understanding by Design model and a three stage backwards design is used in this curriculum map.   In addition to developing three stages per weekly lesson, the development of lesson outcomes, objectives, learning targets, assessments, class resources, and standard alignment for each lesson is described in the curriculum map.
